Birkenhead is situated opposite Liverpool on the Wirral Peninsula, on the left bank of the River Mersey. The town has a long history of ship building and vessels of note include HMS Prince of Wales - a King George V class battleship that helped stop the Bismarck, HMS Conqueror -so far the only nuclear powered submarine in the British fleet to have engaged an enemy ship with torpedoes and HMS Achilles - a New Zealand cruiser that palyed a vital part in the Battle of River Plate. Ship building began in the town in 1829 and was eventually run by Cammel Laird, a merger between the areas two most prominent business in the 19th century. Their influence on the design of the town led to a grid-like pattern centred around Hamilton square, an area that contains the most Grade I listed buildings in England, second only to Trafalgar Square in London. Birkenhead has good transport links, it had the first street tramway in Europe and along with Liverpool, was the first northeast conurbation in England to have an underground railway. The town is home to Tranmere Rovers Football Club which play at Prenton Park near the Tranmere area. Other nearby areas regarded as suburbs of Birkenhead are Bidston, Oxton, Prenton and Noctorum. Famous people associted with Birkenhead include rugby palyer Matt Dawson, footballer Jason McAteer, TV host Paul OGrady, formerly known as Lily Savage and WWI poet Wilfred Owen whose home in Elm Grove has been commemorated with an English Heritage blue plaque
